Case Win: Workplace Health and Safety in Teaching

Advocacy & Support for Teachers

Ensuring workplace health and safety (WH&S) is fundamental in any professional environment, especially in educational settings where the well-being of educators directly impacts student learning.

Susan, a dedicated member of the TPAA Queensland branch, navigated significant challenges related to WH&S with the support of TPAA.

Susan's journey began with her proactive approach to addressing the effects of continuous excessive noise in her classroom caused by two non-verbal students.

Recognising the potential health risks, Susan lodged 4-5 workplace health and safety incidents personally, highlighting the impact of noise on her health and that of two other teacher aides.

The continuous exposure to excessive noise took a toll on Susan's health, resulting in a diagnosis of Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo (BPPV). This condition, possibly exacerbated by the loud classroom environment, prompted Susan to seek support through Workcover. With the guidance of her GP, Susan completed a Work Capacity Certificate and Work Capabilities checklist, aiming to manage her health while advocating for a conducive work environment.

Despite Susan's efforts and medical documentation, challenges arose when she was advised by HR that she cannot return to work. This decision came despite completing necessary assessments and providing medical evidence.

In response to this, Susan took action by logging an enquiry with the South East Region (EQ) regarding the denial of return-to-work support.

Failing to receive appropriate return-to-work support, Susan reached out to the TPAA. With the support of TPAA Susan was reinstated on the payroll allowing her to continue working in a limited capacity during the school holidays. This temporary arrangement aimed to support Susan while awaiting further medical evaluation and a comprehensive plan for her return to full duties.
