TPAV Case Win #1425 - Protecting Teachers' LSL Rights & Other Entitlements

Holding Employers Accountable & Standing up for Teachers

Recently, the Teachers' Professional Association of Victoria (TPAV) secured a remarkable case win by advocating for a member's long service leave (LSL) rights. Our member faced a challenge when a technicality threatened to limit her leave, leaving her with a week less than other colleagues. Seeking our support, she noted how one difference between the TPAV and other unions is that we pick up the phone immediately, and start helping right away.

We assigned a case manager within 24 hours and began engaging in effective communication with the college's employee relations team, leading to a successful resolution that allowed the teacher to use her LSL as intended.

The case involved a dedicated teacher planning to take LSL that overlapped with some holidays. However, a technicality jeopardised her original plan, leaving her short of a week's leave.

After some back and forth, the employee relations team agreed to a resolution. Our member was able to apply for leave in line with her original plans. This secured her an extra week of leave, allowing her to unwind without colleagues working during her time off.

We’re very happy to have been able to get a successful outcome for our member.

Beyond the individual case, the TPAV's win has broader implications for teachers in Australia. By addressing administrative hurdles and advocating for teachers' rights, the TPAV sets a precedent promoting fair treatment and respect for all educators. This empowers teachers to join and seek support from us when facing workplace challenges.

How is the TPAV so effective in defending members during workplace issues and disputes? Our experienced and professional case managers use our unique REDTM case resolution system.

Why is the TPAV different? We believe that real change in education STARTS with empowering frontline teachers, not bureaucrats.
